About The 1839
A digital magazine devoted to the people, public decisions, businesses, traditions and coastal systems shaping Galveston.
Galveston deserves close attention.
More than the postcard
The 1839 covers a port city, beach town, historic island and working community that has always been more complicated than the postcard. We preserve context, introduce people doing useful work and help islanders understand what comes next.
