Privacy at a glance

The 1839 is a static publication with direct contact, newsletter, restaurant-nomination and reader-survey forms. It does not provide reader accounts or public comments, and its website tag denies advertising storage, advertising user data and ad personalization. The site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand how readers use the publication.

Information you choose to send

The contact page sends the name, email address, reason and message you enter directly to The 1839. The newsletter page sends your name, email address, selected interests, optional note and affirmative consent to receive the newsletter. The restaurant guide sends the restaurant, location, dish, nomination reason and optional nominator name you enter. Cloudflare Turnstile helps prevent automated abuse. After validation, these submissions enter a protected Cloudflare D1 queue and are sent to news@the1839.com. Contact, nomination and survey message bodies are removed promptly after successful delivery. Remaining queue records become eligible for deletion after 30 days and are removed by the next five-minute cleanup. The newsroom mailbox keeps its delivered copy under our ordinary editorial and records practices.

When the verified newsletter sync is enabled, newsletter signups remain in the protected D1 queue until the verified The 1839 Mailchimp audience accepts them or until the queue record becomes eligible for deletion after 30 days. New contacts are subscribed immediately after their affirmative on-site consent, without a separate confirmation step; the site does not reactivate addresses Mailchimp identifies as unsubscribed, cleaned or otherwise suppressed. After Mailchimp and newsroom delivery complete, the queue copy of the name, email address and preferences is removed promptly. Mailchimp keeps subscriber information until the reader unsubscribes or asks The 1839 to remove it. While the verified sync is disabled or Mailchimp is temporarily unavailable, the protected D1 queue and newsroom copy preserve the request for follow-up until delivery succeeds or the 30-day queue limit is reached. Restaurant nominations and reader surveys use the protected form pipeline and are retained as editorial input under our ordinary newsroom practices. Survey names and email addresses are optional; when supplied, they may be used to follow up about the response. If you email us directly, we receive the information included in that message and use it to respond, consider a submission or fulfill the request you made.

Site analytics

Google Analytics 4 records page views and, through enhanced measurement, interactions such as scrolls, outbound link clicks, site searches, video engagement and file downloads when those actions occur. Its standard implementation also collects session statistics, approximate location, and browser and device information. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies such as `_ga` to distinguish users and sessions. Google says it uses IP addresses at collection time to derive approximate location and then discards them before the data is logged.

The 1839 does not ask Google Analytics to collect names, email addresses or the content of messages you send us. You can block or delete analytics cookies in your browser or use the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Blocking analytics does not prevent you from reading the site. Google describes its own handling of information in the Google Privacy Policy.

Hosting and external services

Our hosting provider may process ordinary technical logs such as IP address, browser type, requested page and access time for security and reliable delivery. The form service derives a one-way rate-limit key from the submitting IP address; it does not store the raw IP address in the delivery queue. Google processes the newsroom notification through its Gmail API. When the verified newsletter sync is enabled, Intuit Mailchimp processes newsletter subscriptions. Stories may link to or embed services operated by organizations such as YouTube, Castos, Facebook and Instagram. Those services apply their own privacy practices when you visit or play their content.
