The 1839: Podcast Series

Hearts of Galveston

Conversations that reveal what makes Galveston, Galveston.

Host David Landriault sits down with community leaders, restaurateurs, city voices, and recognizable locals to explore how the island shapes the people who shape it.

Real voices. Real Galveston.

“The Heart of Galveston” goes beyond headlines to capture lived experience—how policy touches a neighborhood, how a restaurant becomes a gathering place, and how a legacy is built one decision at a time. Each episode uncovers the values, tensions, and hopes that define life on the island—from mobility and the working waterfront to arts, food, education, and stewardship.

The Lost Interview with Councilperson Bob Brown

Jeff Antonelli on Service and Stewardship with the Heart of Galveston | The 1839

Last August, we filmed an interview with Bob Brown. The camera failed. The conversation didn’t.

Months later, we rediscovered the audio—and realized it was exactly the kind of long-form, thoughtful dialogue that belongs in Hearts of Galveston.

In this “lost interview,” Brown talks about:

• District 3 as “three or four cities in one”

• The future of the working waterfront

• Tourism vs. livability

• Short-term rentals and neighborhood balance

• Why workforce housing may be the keystone issue for Galveston’s future

Some of these issues have evolved since we recorded it. We’ll follow up soon.

But the way he thinks about Galveston hasn’t changed.
